1000 visitors per day!

For the first time ever, Numen has cracked the symbolic high water mark! Yesterday over 1000 visitors came to this site! You can see from the chart below the normal weekend/weekday cycle of the site -- there must be quite a few tests coming up this week!

Thanks so much for using this site. As you know, we recently had a lot of server trouble but I'm happy to say that those problems are all cleared up now!

For those of you who don't know, I continuously correct errors on the site. Although you might find an error now and then, if you report it, I will fix it as soon as I can. Thanks for using this site, and please share it with friends and family, teachers and students, in fact anyone who studies or has a love of the Latin language.

Server Stable

So the server seems stable. That's good news. Thanks to all of you for your feedback over the last few weeks.

I'd like to make small changes to the site and make it more usable? What would you like to see (including big bugs that I've missed)?

Numen is back up!

That was fast! Sorry about the downtime.

Numen is down for a bit ...

Unfortunately the website (and all email functions) are down for the moment. The server crashed! There is no ETA at the moment.

I know this is frustrating for you and it's even more frustrating for me.

I have officially started the search for a new hosting provider and will definitely be switching over to that new hosting provider within a matter of days.

I apologize for the instability of the site, especially at this time in the semester.

Server Slowness -- please provide feedback

Unfortunately, as some of you may have noticed, the server experienced a massive slow-down during the past few weeks that made the lexicon unusable in many instances. I'd like to apologize for that. As soon as I found out about it, I started working with the ISP to correct the issue. They were unable to assist and so I was forced to improvise. I believe I have now corrected the issue, but please feel free to provide feedback. In fact, if you have a moment, please send an email to efesar@unm.edu or add a comment to this post. Please let me know how long you experienced issues and if you have experienced any issues since. Again, I apologize for this technical glitch and I appreciate your patience.

Server Move Successful

It looks like the server move was successful. If you notice any glitches, please leave a comment and let me know so that I can fix it!

Server Move (again!)

Numen is getting a new server! It will be moving sometime this week or next week, depending on how many glitches I run into in the new server environment. So far, it's looking like it will move tomorrow evening (Saturday) the 20th of July, 2013. But, if that doesn't work, I'll try to migrate it over as soon as possible. With any luck, there will be zero down time.

However, after the server move, you might discover glitches. If you do, please just contact me and let me know as soon as possible and I'll get it all squared away.

Lots of little bug fixes...

I found myself with plenty of time this week so I've been fixing some long neglected bugs on this site.

The most important bug I fixed was in the way participial paradigms were formed. I discovered the problem when I parsed montium ("of mountains") and the verb meo came up. Hopefully I fixed the problem without causing too many others.

Also, it may not look this way, but I'm constantly correcting bad dictionary entries or data-entry errors. I usually fix 10-20 per day. Anytime you notice an error in any dictionary entry, please feel free to report it and it'll automatically go into my TODO list!

If you know of a particularly unpleasant or distracting bug that you'd like me to fix, please let me know.

Paradigms for Adjectives and Pronouns

Paradigms for adjectives and pronouns are now online! Find any adjective or pronoun in the dictionary and click See the Complete Paradigm! Please report any errors you find and I'll fix them as soon as possible!

Word Study Tool Sorting

If you use the word study tool, occasionally you'll notice that a word that can be derived from multiple entries (that is, it could be an adjective, a noun, and a participle -- or perhaps it's homonymous with another word), you might see the many words in an apparently random order. At that point, which one do you choose?

I was reading some Apuleius today and I made a simple realization when working with the word Milesio in the first paragraph. The very rare word "milesium" (a kind of kingfisher) was popping up as the first definition and that was clearly wrong.

I thought on it for a moment and wondered how to make the much more common "Milesius" first. Then I realized something: Words which are more common in the dictionary typically have more definitions, more citations, and so on and so forth. Without any sort of intelligent algorithm, I simply sorted by longest dictionary entry to shortest dictionary entry. Voila!

Naturally this solution won't help those Latin readers who are hoping to get some insight into rare forms, but it should help the majority of casual readers to get the see the most likely answer first.

Feedback? Please let me know.

Recent Site Slowness

I would like to apologize for some site slowness in the last week or two. I think the problem is fixed permanently, but if not, feel free to let me know.

Latinitas Recens is now part of Numen

The Latinitas Recens (a dictionary of modern Latin words) is now part of Numen's core dictionary. You should be able to select it as a source in the source box (bottom right hand corner of the full site). Some interesting features of the Latinitas Recens do not currently work as well as planned, for instance expressions. Expressions (compound terms) are a new feature of Numen that will be incorporated eventually. They will show up when you search on them orbrowse for them. However, expressions will not produce paradigms nor will they be accessible through the word study tool.

Please let me know if you find any egregious errors! I'm sure there will be a few of the normal misspellings that need correction, and no doubt a few words will be in the wrong place.

Upcoming Server Move

Within the next week, Numen's physical server will be moving to a new location -- hopefully with a connection about 6 times faster than it's been over the last 10 months. Of course, it's not been exactly slow! But I just wanted to get the word out there because the site might be down for a day or two. With any luck, I can minimize that time and also make it happen on a slow day (historically, Saturdays are the slowest days). I apologize for the inconvenience.

Server Hardware Failure

Hi, Numen users. I really apologize, even more profusely than last time. It turns out that the "power failure" was a little bit more severe than I first believed. It turns out that the motherboard in the server failed. Not to worry - I've replaced all the dead machinery with working parts and it appears that most of the features of the site are up and running. I'll be restoring other services as I find out about them -- but if you happen to see something not working, please let me know right away! Thanks!

Power Failure

My apologies! There was a power failure and I didn't know the server was down. :( But it's back up now!
